Time Magazine’s website has a section called “Thrift Nation” and I found this quick slide show of 17 different snapshots on the current state of American consumer confidence worth the time to go through. They have done a nice job of gathering emblematic experiences, without appearing like too much of cheerleader or a Chicken Little.
Anybody else out there feeling a wee bit weary of all the “we’re going to hell in a hand basket” media stories out there?
And, for the record, I am NOT of the belief that we should be telling people to spend spend spend. Not at all. Don’t get me started on how ridiculous I think 99% of our collective consumption is and what it says about our sense of self and our priorities as a people.
(Yet you work in marketing, you are clucking? I know I know.)
BUT, as someone who needs to consume a lot of media in order to do my job, I am finding it harder to slag through it on an hourly basis. I have declared a personal moratorium on certain kinds of news right now. Mama tired, people.
How are you keeping track of the vibe right now? Do you feel it’s important to do so?
I ask my business owner friends pointed questions, when I am wandering about stores I ask the staff what’s going on, what’s the most expected positive thing that’s happened of late. I’m taking photos of things I see on the street that I think could be good visuals within my reports. I’m trying to create a time capsule and hopefully it will make more sense as time goes by.
