I love hearing about all the creativity going on in the retail sector these days. I know a lot of it is under duress but hope all of these innovative people and businesses emerge stronger, with more loyal customers, for their efforts.
Target and Anna Sui just announced that she will be this autumn’s designer collaborator. Just as the McQ + Target capsule was inspired by a pop culture figure (a band that Alexander McQueen loves,) Anna Sui has said her capsule will be inspired by “Gossip Girl.” I think these little collections are stronger for NOT being watered-down, cheap versions of the designers’ main collection. It shows much better understanding of Target’s shoppers and I imagine, gives the designer and her team a chance to work in an exciting, different direction. What creative mind wouldn’t enjoy the challenge? I can’t wait to see what Little-Miss-Hippie-Rock-Chic makes when inspired by Blair.
The new issue of Lucky magazine has a fantastic section on some of the cool things their favorite retailers are doing to shake things up.
Apartment number 9 and by george are having portions of their stores become single label pop-up boutiques. In exchange for taking the goods on consignment, the stores are featuring the label’s entire collection. I imagine all parties think this is a great compromise for shaky times. This is definitely an idea that I will track and attempt to find some numbers on.
I wish one of these were in New York so I could go check them out. Any body in LA or Austin who has seen, please let me know. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
