For the Cohens, who made their fortune creating and building the luxury children’s clothing brand Bonpoint, Merci is a way to combine their love of quality products with a fundamental desire to give something back to the world.
“I cracked open my little black book and starting calling everyone I knew,” Marie-France Cohen said with a laugh. The Cohens spent three years bringing together brands, designers, artists and suppliers willing to sell their products at cost to Merci, or to donate a percentage of their wholesale price to Merci’s charity.
The result is a light-filled industrial space of 1,500 square meters, or 16,000 square feet, spread over three stories. The open plan venue has been broken up into different areas of interest and luxury goods.
“The resulting effect of the store is that of an oversized curiosity cabinet, filled with an eclectic and stylish mix of high and low pieces by famous designer names and unknown artists. The only worry now is where it will find more stock to fill the empty shelves once word gets out that, at Merci at least, shopping really is good for you.”
