I think I fell in love last night with an Italian actress.
A friend graciously offered me a ticket to the opening night of Lincoln Center’s New Italian Cinema Festival and I jumped at the chance for a free glass of wine, some cheese nibbles, and a movie. I had no idea what we were going to see – hadn’t checked the program or anything – I just showed up when I was told.
I saw Galantuomini which is described by a poster at IMDB as
“In essence, this film could be a 1930s Warner gangster film: two childhood friends split up and meet more than twenty years later; one has become a gangster, the other a public prosecutor. The twist here- which they couldn’t have then- is that the gangster is a woman and they begin to fancy each other. ”
There are some major logic holes in the story and I mean this in the best possible way, it’s totally Italian, which means it’s a bit of a melodramatic love story. I enjoyed the film because I was very moved by Donatella Finocchiaro’s performance. I’ve thought about her all day, especially the sexism that she must confront in doing her job, yet at the same time exploits as she tries to deflect interest in the drugs and homicides around her. And her eyes! Utterly fantastico.
One of the BEST things about living in New York is availability of cultural activities such as this from every corner of the globe. I always feel so grateful for the opportunity, you know? Curious about the lives of southern Italian women – check out this and other offerings over the next week.
